Procedure
Introduction: I begin by asking the class to take out their journal and a pencil and give them ten minutes to write on the journal prompt:
“Arthur Miller, the author of The Crucible, was a well known Hollywood play write whom was accused of association with Communists, severely dampening his career. Do you think he wrote The Crucible in response to his accused guilt? What kind of a message is he sending? Is Miller at all like John Proctor?”
Afterwards I ask for volunteers to share and try to get at least a 5 minute discussion going about the journal prompt.
Guided Practice: I will ask the students to take out their film notes so that we may continue watching the McCarthyism documentary. I let the documentary role for the rest of the class, finishing the remaining 35 minutes.
Conclusion: If there are a few minutes left, hold a short discussion. What does McCarthyism have in common with the Salem Witch Trials?
